Strong Bones & height in kids

Strong Bones & height in kids

Why is everybody so crazy about Vitamin D? Suddenly it has become the star of the supplement show.

The reason why Vitamin D has become famous is that it has multiple roles in almost all parts of body.

How can I get Vitamin D Naturally?

It is called sunshine vitamin (Sun being the natural source) but is also referred to as 'King of Vitamins'. About 90% of this nutrient is made by the body when skin is exposed to UVB rays from sunlight. Other sources are oily fish, such as tuna, mackerel, sardines, salmon, and cod liver oil are naturally rich sources of Vitamin D for kids. Nowadays, Vitamin D-enhanced and fortified foods include eggs, milk, orange juice, and cereal are also available.

How much Vitamin D should children take daily?

Age Group Daily Recommendation of Vitamin D
Babies 0 -12 months old 400 IU (10 mcg)
Children 1 – 13 years old 600 IU (15 mcg)
Teenagers 14-18 years old 600 IU (15 mcg)

How Do I Know if My Child has a Deficiency?

A blood test can identify vitamin D deficiency.

Infants and children should be screened for deficiency if they have signs of:

  • poor growth
  • gross motor delays
  • are exclusively breastfed
  • demonstrate unusual irritability
  • use known Vitamin D lowering medications
  • have malabsorption syndromes or inflammatory bowel diseases
  • have frequent fractures
  • have low bone mineral density
  • are overweight or obese
  • consume low amounts of vitamin D-rich foods or have unhealthy food habits ( junk food)

A simple blood test can tell the levels of Vitamin D and whether supplementation is needed of not.

What is the role of Vitamin D in kids?

1. Stronger Bones

Calcium and phosphorus are two important nutrients for better bone density, stronger teeth, and skeletal system. Without vitamin D3, the body is unable to absorb calcium and phosphorus. Deficiency of calcium and phosphorus in kids may lead to a serious condition called rickets in which bones become weak and legs appear bowed. The growth and height in kids gets hampered.

2. Improved Immune System

Vitamin D works like a hormone in the body that regulates cellular function, helps in building immunity and several disease resistance. According to research published in 2006, vitamin D protects against influenza and respiratory viruses.

3. Healthy Weight Management

Deficiency of Vitamin D can result in unhealthy weight gain in children. Obesity has become common in India, and children with obesity are majorly Vitamin D deficient. An acute deficiency of Vitamin D may lead to metabolic disease risks.

4. Better Mood

Vitamin D has a significant effect on mood. Kids who spend enough time under the sun are less cranky and happier as compared to kids who don’t spend much time outdoors. Along with clinical treatments, Vitamin D also helps in overcoming depression in children.

5.  Eye health

Vitamin D helps in reducing dryness of eyes (caused by digital screens), maintain vision, delay ageing changes like cataract etc

In nutshell, Vitamin D is very essential for children, unfortunately, there are very few sources of this vitamin. With Covid-19 in the picture, outdoor activities have become minimal for kids.
